Syracuse faces a persistent $30 million annual budget deficit. While the current administration has proposed yet another 2% property tax increase, it’s important to note that property taxes have already gone up 2% annually for the past three years. Currently, only 48% of Syracuse residents pay property taxes, carrying the financial burden for services that benefit the entire city. That’s not sustainable or fair. We believe this burden should be more equally shared.
Implementing a Commuter Tax
One equitable solution is a commuter tax, modeled after Philadelphia’s wage tax, which collects revenue from non-residents who work within the city. These individuals rely on Syracuse’s roads, police, sanitation, and infrastructure, yet contribute nothing to their upkeep. A commuter tax would help correct this imbalance and reduce the over-reliance on city homeowners to fill the budget gap. It’s a smarter, fairer approach than continuing to raise property taxes year after year.
Investing in Urban Agriculture
We also believe economic growth must be rooted in our community. Investing in urban agriculture not only provides healthy food access and new job opportunities, but also boosts the local economy by keeping food dollars circulating in Syracuse. When schools, hospitals, and other institutions buy from local growers, everyone benefits. This type of investment strengthens all sectors, from health to education to small business.
A Call for Comprehensive Financial Planning
The commuter tax is just one piece of the puzzle. Our team is committed to thoughtful, long-term financial planning that looks beyond quick fixes and annual tax hikes. It’s time to stop putting bandages on the problem and start implementing solutions that are bold, fair, and community-driven.
